GETTING ACQUAINTED
Your Room
Your room assignment at St. John’s Mercy Hospital is based upon your
admitting diagnosis and the beds available on the day of your admission. In
addition to semi private rooms, which have two beds, private rooms may be available.
We cannot guarantee a private room unless your medical condition mandates a
private room. Most health insurance plans cover the charge for a semi-private
room. If you select a private room, you may be responsible for the additional
charge.
Your Hospital Bed
Hospital beds are electrically operated, and your nurse will show you how to
work your bed properly. Surroundings different from home and sleeping medication
could cause you to be confused during the night. Please be aware that your
hospital bed may be narrower and higher than your bed at home. The top
two side rails may be raised at night. All four side rails may be raised
at your request. For your safety, you are encouraged to remain in bed or
call your nurse for help.
Room Temperature
All rooms in the hospital are centrally heated and air-conditioned. If your
room temperature is not comfortable, please notify the staff.
Leaving the Floor
Please check with your nurse before you leave the floor for any reason to make
sure your physician has given approval and to let us know where you will
be.
Calling Your Nurse
A button to call your nurse is located at your bedside. When you press the
button, the nursing station is alerted that you need assistance and a light
flashes above your door. A staff member will respond to your signal as
soon as possible.
During the Night
Please ask for assistance if you need to get up at night. Strange surroundings
and medications may create a hazard if you get out of bed. Please use your
nurse call button and we will respond promptly.
Television
A color television is provided in your room. Some cable channels are available.
Please be considerate of other patients by keeping the volume low and turning
it off at bedtime.

may receive calls in their room from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Local calls may
be made at any time from the room by dialing 9 and the number. You may call
the hospital’s operator by dialing 0 at any time
for assistance.
Long distance and toll

calls cannot be charged to your room. You can make a credit card call or
charge a long distance call back to your home number.
