Hospice Facts and Figures

Facts and Figures:

  • In 2007, St. John's Mercy Hospice served more than 1,250 patients and their families in Missouri.
  • In 2007, the average length of stay of a hospice patient was 62 1/2 days.
  • In 2007, our Complimentary Therapy Program provided more than 100 patients with more than 200 hours of massage, accupuncture and music therapy.

  • With offices based in St. Louis and Washington, we serve St. Louis City and the following 13 surrounding counties: St. Louis, Jefferson, Franklin, St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln, Pike, Montgomery, Gasconade, Crawford, Washington, St. Francois, and Ste. Genevieve.

  • With a skilled and highly trained care team—including registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers, home health aides, chaplains and spiritual advisors, volunteers, and support staff—we provide 24 hour care to patients regardless of age, race, gender, creed, physical condition or financial means.

  • Patients who lack financial resources may still receive the full benefits of hospice care, with the support of the St. John's Mercy Hospice Memorial Fund, which provides financing for such items as hospice and nursing services, medications, clothing and personal supplies, and funeral arrangements.

  • In 2007, more than 130 active volunteers contributed over 5,175 hours of direct patient and family support, in addition to helping with fundraising and administrative duties. All volunteers working directly with patients and families undertake 16 hours of mandatory training.

  • Service is focused primarily on the needs of the patients, but St. John's Mercy Hospice also reaches out to provide strength and healing for the patient's family and caregivers. This includes regular contact with bereavement and grief counseling for up to 13 months after loss of their loved one.

  • Each year, St. John's Mercy Hospice generates more than $140,000 to benefit the Memorial Fund through fundraising efforts, including honor memorial gifts, community support, newsletter contributions and our main fundraising events: the "Hats Off to Hospice" spring fashion show and the "Angels Among Us" Christmas campaign.
