Ministry Promotes Sale
of Fair Trade Coffee, Tea and Cocoa Products
St. John’s Mercy Neighborhood Ministry is advocating fair trade with the promotion
and sale of Equal Exchange coffee, tea and cocoa products. This workerowned
cooperative ensures that more of our coffee dollar reaches the people who do
the hard work of growing, harvesting and processing the beans for our cup of
coffee.
More than 70 percent of
the coffee we drink is grown by small farmers who live in the rural regions
of some of the world’s poorest countries. These farmers do not have access
to trade markets and must sell their crops to middlemen who keep much of
the profit. Large coffee plantations employ workers who labor long hours
for low wages and few benefits. The efforts of fair trade help farmers sustain
and develop their own farms, contributing to the well-being of their families
and countries as well.
A variety of products are
available for purchase through St. John’s Mercy Neighborhood
Ministry, including traditional and flavored coffees, and organic coffee,
tea, and cocoa. These items make ideal gifts and will benefit both farmers
in the developing world and the local work of the Neighborhood Ministry and
Health Center. For more information about this program, please contact St.
John’s Mercy Neighborhood Ministry at 314-865-0927 extension
