The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. John's Mercy Medical Center has the very special mission of treating and nurturing babies born prematurely or with significant medical problems. To assist you during this time, we have combined important introductory information to orient you to our NICU, an explanation of terms commonly used in the NICU and a list of the professionals and the services they provide for your baby in our nursery.

The NICU at St. John's Mercy is staffed by physicians, nurses and therapists who specialize in the care of infants with extraordinary needs. They, with the help of our unit's highly sophisticated equipment, are dedicated to helping your baby thrive and grow.

We hope to make what is often a frightening and anxious situation as reassuring as possible for you and your family. This web site contains information about some of the procedures and terms you may hear during your baby's stay with us. We hope you take some time to review this information and we encourage you to ask questions.

You may call us as often as you wish, any time of the day or night. If your baby is in the NICU North, the phone number is 314-251-6450. If your baby is in the NICU South, the phone number is 314-251-6286. A toll-free number is also available for use by parents. The number is 1-800-NICUNET (642-8638). You can also learn more about the NICU on this website. Please note that we can only give information regarding your baby's condition to you, the parents.
