Orthotic Evaluation and Management

Therapists work closely with physicians, orthotists, and ped-orthotists in determining the need for upper and lower extremity bracing. Appropriate orthotic devices are selected and fabricated to maximize support and function of the limbs. Patients are instructed in donning and doffing, wear schedules, care of the braces, and use of the braces during everyday activities.

Custom Foot Orthotics

St. John¹s Mercy Sports & Therapy has a specially trained physical therapist who can assess your need for custom-made foot orthotics. The first session consists of a physical examination and the casting of an individual¹s feet. These casts are then shipped to a manufacturer who will make your customized orthotics from these molds. The style of the orthotic is selected based on the needs of the individual. The orthotics can be made to wear in casual or athletic shoes, as well as dress shoes, including high heels. We offer these orthotics at a significantly lower price in comparison to other fabrication methods.

What are the benefits of custom foot orthotics?

  • Improved biomechanical alignment and stability
  • Decreased pain
  • Enhanced comfort, cushioning, and control
  • Improved shock absorption
  • Cost effective, customized orthotics

How do I know if I need custom-made orthotics?
Biomechanical indications that can be treated with custom orthotics include, but are not limited to:

  • Generalized foot pain or fatigue
  • Bunions
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fascitis
  • Neuromas
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Postural low back problem

If you think you may benefit from custom orthotics:
A physician¹s referral is required for evaluation. Insurance coverage of custom orthotics varies by individual health plans, so check with your carrier to verify coverage. Turnaround time from evaluation to receipt of orthotics is approximately two weeks. You will have one follow up visit with the physical therapist when your orthotics arrive in order to evaluate fit, discuss wearing schedule, and answer any questions.
