Core Curriculum Transition Year Program

The Transitional Year Program (TYP) is designed to provide educational and clinical experience to meet the needs of the individual resident as he or she prepares to enter a medical or surgical specialty area. The program format and its content are structured to conform to ACGME guidelines. The majority of time in the program is spent on ACGME - accredited services. A typical program year consists of 3 months of inpatient internal medicine, 2 months of med-surg ICU, one month each of ambulatory medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry and surgery. The remaining 3 months of the residency training include one or more of the following electives: anesthesiology, all of the sub-specialties of internal medicine and surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, the neurosciences, physical medicine, diagnostic and neuroradiology, etc.

All elective programs are coordinated with the existing medical education programs within the Medical Center. All conferences and teaching exercises in the Center are open to transitional year residents as their schedules permit. An ACLS course is provided and participation is required before the training program is started.

Residents are accepted into the program through the National Resident Matching Program. Applications must be submitted via ERAS.
Currently there are 11 residents in the program at St. John's Mercy Medical Center.
